Second Life Goes Hollywood

Found this on Charlottesville Media Blog today...

The emerging medium of the metaverse is giving aspiring filmmakers such as Ariella Furman an outlet to practice their craft in a new setting. Furman makes machinimas starring avatars that can be played either within Second Life or on an everyday Web site.

Ariella Furman took her first summer vacation as a college graduate to Walt Disney World, where reality hides behind princesses.

When it was over, she returned to Ivyland, Bucks County, Pa., and her job making videos — or more accurately, machinimas — for the virtual world Second Life, where reality hides behind avatars.

Furman, 21, is among a growing number of people who earn very real money in this real-time Web community. An increasing number of corporations, organizations, schools, even TV shows are hungry to have a presence on Second Life, to tap its participants for their products and programs.

“To young people, it doesn’t seem so far-fetched,” Furman says. “My parents, they just don’t understand.”

An Aeroplane About To Crash Into Your SL?

Whereupon Blackthorn Hare creates "Yes" and becomes the first person on the planet to get his Masters degree in Second Life sculpture

If you have an interest in seeing this build in person, go soon. The sim will be wiped clean on March 11th (teleport directly from here).

photography by Stephen Venkman

It's a terrible scene. In a nanosecond, a plane will smash into a million bits after nosediving into the middle of a busy four-way intersection in smalltown Anywhere, USA.

This being Second Life, however, we are able to do something that would not be possible in any other medium: walk around a frozen moment and observe and speculate on all that transpired to induce it.

While freezing an action scene and then showing various images of the subject from different points of view has been done many times cinematically, it is the opportunity to experience it in first person and choose what to ......

Top 10 Tips For Second Life Business Success

Having just got stuck into the new birthday book about how to be a successful entrepreneur in Second Life, Hermione was interested to see a Google Alert come in, highlighting an article from ArminasX who owns a successful particle effect shop in SL.

RedthickWhat are particle effects?  They are the often very beautiful effects you can place in your house, shop or club to make effects like rain, snow, sparkly glitter falling, or Hermione went to a party the other day where the particles effects were birthday balloons.

ArminasX says "Available today at Electric Pixels are six new "Leaf" effects. They are devices that you can place within your trees to produce a stream of falling leaves.

The six different types correspond to the amount of leaves and the color. You can choose between Red/Yellow/Brown and Thick or Thin. Pictured is Red Thick.

ArminasxI'm a business owner, builder and explorer of Second Life. I own a particle effects shop in Second Life called Electric Pixels and I have things to say about my experiences - in running a virtual business, building virtual products and exploring the virtual world.

I seem to have developed a rather successful Second Life business, and I am often asked how I did it. There's no magic to it, you just have to do the basics of any start up business and follow common sense. Here's ten tips that might get you started on the way to your first million Linden $!

  1. Pick the right type of business. There are limitless possibilities for Second Life businesses, but you should pick something that fits the following: You must be reasonably familiar with the area or topic; You must be sufficiently skilled to do the necessary work, which might include leadership, social, artistic or technical skills; There shouldn't be too much existing competition, especially large and mature competition; Most critically you must have ..."

Entrepreneurs Guide To Second Life

Mulholland_001 All rental apartments at Manhattan Beach rented now, with Larimar’s help, and three of the Beach Houses at Venetian Shores are gone now.

Just two left and you can view them at 170,172,21.

Hermione might make a profit soon on rental income v land tier fees.

If only she could stop shopping!  Lari’s working hard on networking (or so she calls it LOL) and will be wanting a virtual salary soon….

51sgvvdcxel__aa240__2 And a late birthday present has just arrived – so exciting!

“The Entrepreneurs Guide To Second Life” by Daniel Terdiman.

My daughter is awaiting this as keenly as I am, as we have FINALLY managed to get her account transferred to the teen grid, but it's a bit dull apparently so she needs something to do when she's in there.

Have fun, we are!

More News On Teen Second Life Accounts....

I did a Google search to see if anyone else is having the same problems signing up for Teen Second Life as my two kids are having and lo and behold, they are!  Over at the always excellent Wagner James Au's blog there is a whole thread with many many comments about it....I'm now sorry I made my teen give up her account on the Main Grid now and it looks as if her treasured inventory contents are as far away as ever...

However, there seems to be some hope as, while the SMS verification is not working outside the USA, if you sign up for a Premium account, there might be a chance you can verify by PayPal....I will report back.

UPDATE:  No joy, as the only option for verification is SMS even when trying to sign up for a Premium account - they just dont' ask for your PayPal email at all.  Failed again.

Second Life Teen Grid - The Dirty Secret Nobody Acknowledges...

Over at Second Life Insider there is a post by Moo Money that is talking about the economy in Teen Second Life that begins by saying

"I've previously mentioned how depressed the economy is on the Teen Grid. They create content for essentially peanuts. Their lindens cost the same as ours, but they can purchase three times the amount of items. Some innovative teens are working to change that, though.

Digital Refinery, the brainchild of Reallife Orca, is a teen-run content company with some of the finest content creators on the grid. They realized that Main Grid content companies had clients that weren't able to target their main market. Designers such as Ryan Dayton, Nikolai Althouse, and Brooke Barmy will be working with clients to show off their work.

Now that it's summer, concurrency will more than double, to a whopping 500 residents on at a time. Hopefully this will call attention to the Teen Grid and bring in more residents....."

READ MORE HERE >>>> but basically, nobody seems to know that it's impossible to sign up for a new Teen account at the moment, and believe me, I've been trying since about March 2007, on behalf of my two teens.

Countless fruitless emails and now calls to the support number given to me by a Linden in an email, but still no joy.  The UK based support team acknowledge there is a problem with ALL NEW ACCOUNT SIGNUPS for Teen Second Life, but there is no notice to this effect on the signup page.  Would be bad PR I suppose.

My daughter in frustration signed up for an adult account, but I didn't feel happy about this, and we contacted the support team, who froze her Premium account (which I'm still paying for) and said to email her scanned birth certificate to Blue (Blu?) at Linden Labs and it would be transferred to the teen grid (existing accounts can be moved apparently).

More phone calls and emails, but still no transfer.

No wonder the Teen Grid economy is depressed and they want more residents.   If nobody can join, then they wont' get any either!

Talking of Second Life Insider, there appear to be comments on posts, but I can't, for the life of me, see a "comment" link so I can make one!
